India to Harness AI for Climate Change Mitigation and Enhanced Weather Forecasting

India plans to leverage AI for climate change mitigation and adaptation, as well as
economic growth, according to Abhay Karandikar, secretary of India's Department of Science
and Technology (DST). The DST's missions, NMSHE and NMSKCC, have significantly
advanced climate research. AI will enhance weather forecasting, with the India
Meteorological Department (IMD) already integrating AI and machine learning for improved
accuracy. This approach aims to address climate impacts on agriculture, water, and the
environment, supporting India's agrarian economy and boosting forecast precision at local
levels.
