A research team led by Professor Jun-Hyuk Moon in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Korea University has developed a new technology for forming nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes at high density using a dry process without the use of a solution.
Carbon nanotubes coated with oxide nanoparticles have attracted attention as a next-generation energy electrode material. Due to their high conductivity and active surface area, they play a key role as electrode materials. However, conventional manufacturing methods based on solution-based coating have limitations in high-density coating due to problems such as aggregation of nanoparticles.
The research team used a dry nanoparticle coating technology, in which a thin oxide layer is deposited on carbon nanotubes and then converted into nanoparticles through a carbothermal reduction reaction. Since this method does not use a solution, there is no aggregation of nanoparticles, and it is possible to achieve uniform and high-density nanoparticle coating.
The team applied the nanoparticle-coated carbon nanotubes produced by this technology as the cathode material for lithium-sulfur batteries, and it showed an energy density about 2.5 times higher than that of existing lithium-ion batteries
