Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh officially launched the groundbreaking BioE3 policy, positioning India as a global leader in the biotechnology revolution and driving the nation's vision for "Viksit Bharat @2047." The policy, approved by the Union Cabinet under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, aims to foster high-performance biomanufacturing and align with national sustainability initiatives such as "Net Zero" and Mission LiFE.
Dr. Singh highlighted that the BioE3 policy will transform key sectors including food, energy, health, and climate-resilient agriculture.
It focuses on six themes: bio-based chemicals, smart proteins, precision biotherapeutics, carbon capture, and marine and space research. The policy will be instrumental in leveraging India's vast biodiversity and bioresources, particularly in the Himalayas and coastal regions.
India 's bioeconomy has seen tremendous growth, soaring from $10 billion in 2014 to over $130 billion in 2024, with ambitious projections of $300 billion by 2030. Dr. Singh praised PM Modi's role, stating that India will lead the biotechnology revolution of the 21st century, much like the IT revolution was driven by the West. The policy will also employ a public-private partnership (PPP) model to encourage industry participation and job creation, marking a critical shift in India's biotech strategy.
