IIT Indore Pioneers Intelligent Receivers for Secure 6G and Military Communications

2025-01-29

IIT Indore, under the leadership of Prof. Swaminathan R from the Electrical Engineering Department, is developing advanced intelligent receivers aimed at enhancing 6G networks and military communication systems. These receivers utilize deep learning algorithms to automatically detect and decode key communication methods such as modulation, channel coding, and interleaving, even in noisy or challenging environments. This innovation addresses the growing need for robust and secure communication solutions in the era of 6G and Internet of Things (IoT).

Traditional communication systems rely on multiple receivers for different scenarios, increasing complexity and costs. IIT Indore's receivers adapt dynamically to various conditions, offering a cost-effective alternative while improving security and efficiency. Early tests demonstrate their capability to identify different encoding and interleaving methods, outperforming existing systems in decoding signals in complex wireless environments.

This technology is crucial for future 6G infrastructure, which requires handling ultra-fast mobile internet and vast device networks, as well as for military applications, where secure and reliable data transmission is paramount. The project is supported by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) as part of India's 6G research initiative. Testing with software-defined radio devices is ongoing to expand the system's compatibility across communication standards from 3G to 6G.

Prof. Suhas Joshi, Director of IIT Indore, highlighted the innovation’s potential to simplify communication systems, reduce energy consumption, and optimize the use of radio frequencies. These advancements could revolutionize telecommunications and military fields, ensuring efficiency, adaptability, and enhanced security for next-generation communication networks.
