South Korean government will invest 2.7496 trillion KRW (1.87 billion USD) in 2025 to accelerate technology development for climate crisis performance. Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT), in collaboration with 14 related ministries and 12 local governments, will also promote the establishment of an implementation plan for the "Basic Plan for Technology Development of Climate Change Performance (2023-2032)."
The basic plan presents the direction for responding to the climate crisis through scientific and technological innovation over the next 10 years. To accelerate the technology development for climate change response in 2025, the three major strategies of ▲Greenhouse Gas Reduction, ▲Climate Change Adaptation, and ▲Creation of an Innovation Ecosystem will be pursued jointly by central government agencies, local governments, and the private sector.
To reduce greenhouse gas emissions, support for technology development for various carbon-free energy sources will be expanded, including: core technologies for renewable energy such as next-generation solar cells and ultra-large floating offshore wind power; non-renewable energy such as next-generation nuclear systems including innovative small modular reactors and technology for stable nuclear power plant operation; next-generation secondary batteries; hydrogen production, storage, and transportation technologies; and wave power generation.
In the field of climate change adaptation, core technology development will be supported to assess vulnerabilities to climate impacts on ecosystems and forests and seek countermeasures, and to strengthen the safety management of agricultural production infrastructure in preparation for extreme climate change and disasters.
Furthermore, to create an innovation ecosystem, support will be provided to revitalize the climate technology industry through the establishment of infrastructure for battery safety assessment and future nuclear technology development. Public consensus on climate change will be continuously promoted through the operation of regional carbon-neutral experience centers. Global R&D personnel will be fostered through joint research between domestic and international climate technology institutions, and human resource development tailored to the needs of the climate technology industry will also be pursued to enhance climate technology R&D capabilities and continuously support the sustainable growth of the climate technology industry.
