2025-01-29

The Korea AeroSpace Administration (KASA) has designated the KAIST Satellite Technology Research Center (SaTReC) as its first Aerospace Research and Development (R&D) Mission Center. The KASA designates mission centers to establish collaborative systems for innovative technology development and human resource training with private institutions such as universities that possess excellent technology and personnel.

SaTReC, designated as the first mission center, has experience developing numerous satellites, including Korea's first satellite, KITSAT-1 (UriByeol-1), launched in 1992, and the first ultra-small satellite constellation launched in 2024.

With this designation as the KASA's first mission center, SaTReC plans to focus on developing active control precursor technologies and related human resource training in connection with the ongoing "Development Project for Precursor Technology of Active Control of Space Objects." Active control precursor technology refers to technology that approaches space objects such as satellites and asteroids to modify their position or orbit.

Dr. Kwang-Hyung Lee, the President of KAIST, stated, "With this designation as the first Aerospace R&D Mission Center, we will continue to promote innovative research and the training of specialized talent pool for deep space exploration in cooperation with the KASA.
